How to reuse existing furniture in a new design

Whether you decide to redesign your home or move into a new home, there are often furniture pieces that you would like to keep. This could be due to expenses or sentimental reasons. Whatever your reason may be, here are some tips to help you give new life to  these pieces.

1- Plan/ Design around the piece

If the piece is big enough, like a sofa set or even a piano, it sometimes makes sense to design around the piece. In this case, you choose the design theme and the other pieces based on the existing ones. Talk with your designer when creating the new design to do this. However, it is important to note that keeping too many of the existing pieces and designing around them makes it hard to create a new look.

2- Give the piece a makeover

Reupholster, paint or give a new finish to the pieces to give them a new look. Match with colors or finishes of the new interior design and repurpose them to give a completely new look to the piece. For example, if you have a wooden cabinet that you want to reuse in a minimal style space, you can paint it white or even grey.

3- Combine with other similar pieces to form a design unit

If the item is small enough, create a larger unit by adding more similar pieces to add to the design weight. For example a small vase by itself may look out of place. Add two more similar pieces of varying heights to give it significance and turn it into a strong decor element.
